Curitiba is the capital of the southern state of Parana and one of the most prosperous and organized cities in Brazil. The city is also known as the ecological capital of Brazil. Curitiba has 26 parks of well-preserved environment with rich and diversified flora and fauna.Strolling around the city’s historic district is a delight, it is an area of perfectly preserved 18th and 19th-century buildings where you find bars, restaurants, art and craft galleries, antique shops and cultural centres. There you can visit some of the city’s main touristic attraction such as the Red House, the Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis, the Flowers Clock, the Memory Fountain or Casa Romário Martins, considered the oldest building in Curitiba. As well in the area, Memorial de Curitiba, a cultural centre which houses art exhibits, plays and musical presentations, contrasts sharply with the historic buildings typical of the area. Tiradentes Square, the main square in Curitiba, has a lively atmosphere and it is a permanent meeting point. The square is dominated by the Basilica Cathedral Minor de Nossa Senhora da Luz. But Curitiba's trademark and favourite attraction is the superb the Jardim Botanico, a huge green area created to resemble a French garden.Curitiba is a modern city, with a vibrant downtown and lots to see and do. If you are heading for Iguaçu Falls from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, it's worth stopping by for a day or two, although you'll most probably end up staying longer as the city is really fascinating.
